The mini zoo at the Kittur Rani Chennamma Nisargadhama is gifted with nature’s bounty. The mini zoo situated 13 km from Belgaum city at Bhutramanhatti village on Pune-Bangalore National Highway is worth paying a visit. Even if a visitor is not really enthused with the few species of wild life housed there, one would relish and appreciate the calm, peaceful, serene, cool and pollution-free environment. Spread in over 32 hectares, the mini Zoo was started in 1989 and due to lack of funds and a desire from the authorities the said mini zoo was not much developed.

Deputy Conservator of Forests Girish Hosur has now taken keen interest in developing this mini zoo and is trying to get grandeur to it. We all have grown up seeing the deers, Peacocks, rabbits at the Military Mahadev but the mini zoo is now developing and worth a visit.

New enclosures have been built at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh. A black buck enclosure and aviary are also ready.

When have u seen a White peacock in Belgaum, now one can see it at the Mini zoo. The mini zoo has added 60 more birds of different species in its family, including White Peacock at Bhutramanahatti in Belgaum thanks to the Forest department.

9 different species of birds have been brought from Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens of Mysore. Silver Pigeon and White Peacock are the most important amongst the species housed in here presently.

The new birds at the Zoo comprise – White Peacock (2), Grey Jungle Fowl (2), Silver Pigeon (7), Plum Headed Parakeet (6), Common Ring Necked Pigeon (6), Lovebirds (10), Peach Faced Lovebirds (10), Cockatiel (10) and Lady Amherst’s Pheasant (7), Black Buck (2). It also houses crocodiles, deers, rabbits etc.

Along with getting new species to the zoo, a new facelift is being given to the zoo by way of beautification works.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka recently released Rs.35 lakhs out of which 10 lakhs have been used for the bird aviary. A new Pheasant Tree is also being built.

Sambars would be the new additions to the zoo soon and also many new things like a full fledged restaurant is also planned. Even a rope way has been made for the kids to enjoy and many more games based on physical activities are planned and are being deployed.

The Mini Zoo is open on Weekdays from 10.30 am to 5 pm with a small entry fee.
