No doubt India has different names, which we use them even today. India, Bharat and Hindustan all are the same. Similarly, Belgaum(now renamed Belagavi) went through different name changes ever since the Ratta Dynasty started ruling this place.
Below are the names it achieved in the past history.

Jirnasitapura – Old Belgaum and Shahpur, the then Sapur were together called Jirnasitapura in the 7th Century. [ Reference Pg 138 of The Indian Antiquary ]

Vamsapura, it got this name when Queen Gunavati got a offspring from King Kuntamaraya. [ Reference – Pg 140 of The Indian Antiquary ]

Venugrama or Velugrama or Ikshugrama was the name in 805 AD [ Reference – Pg 862 of Karnataka State Gazetteer]
Venugram in 1199AD [ Refrence – Pg 862 of Karnataka State Gazetteer]

Azamnagar [ According to Mr. Strokes (Belgaum, 45), after the fall of bijapur, the fort of Belgaum remained for several years in possession of Aurangzeb’s second son Azam and from him was called Azamnagar. This seems doubtful.
According to Orme (Historical Fragments, 286-287) Belgaum was called Azamnagar under the Bijapur Kings. Reference – Pg 547 Bombay of Gazzattee]Mustafabad [ In memory of one of its Commandants or Killedars, who thoroughly repaired and strengthened the ramparts of the Belgaum Fort. Refrence – Pg 548 of Bombay Gazetteer ]Belagugrama to Belugav to Belgavi [ Refrence – Pg 500 of Bombay Gazetteer ]

Othere places name changes that were also related to Belgaum were :-
Yalur [ Refrence Book A Legend of Old Belgaum, May 1875 Pg – 139.]
Yellur as we know it today.
Sapur in 11th Century [ Reference Pg 138 of The Indian Antiquary ]

  1. A question 4 all of you including the author ; presently the name is ‘BELGAUM’,,,what will happen if we change the name from BELGAUM to BELAGAVI or any other name ??????? does it affects on our infrastructure ??? does it develop our bad roads???? does it make an Industrial city???? will it create communal harmony among all ????? will the people live peacefully by changing its name????? will Farmers get their rights for their pending payments with government / private sectors ???? will the political people become sincere towards their duty and stop developing their own assets and concentrate on developing our city & its people???? Just ask yourself these questions,,,,If you think with your calm mind, definitely there is nothing regarding the development of our city in this matter of “CHANGING NAME”. Its all a Political issue, which the big players play it. Just they use common people for creating these issues. Rather than writing / discussing on these useless issues, its better to review our city development, where its lacking, what needs to be developed,, and if its not done just catch hold of the neck of responsible person / minister and chase him. this will definitely help our city in development.

  2. Doesn’t make any difference. Neither Kannada people are interested in this nor marathi people. I would rather appreciate if the state and central government together improve the infrastructure of the city. It can be really beautiful city under our Hon. Prime Minister’s leadership. Better roads, 24 hours electricity, drinking water facilities , schools, colleges and job opportunities, beautiful parks and development of forests and wildlife, within our district are the long long term expectations (which are rather the basic ones) of the Belgaumites. Please concentrate on that, rather than developing some filthy issues between kannada and marathi people by changing the name of the city. When you fulfill the basic needs of a common man, i don’t see any reason for anybody to support some xyz person, who has evil intentions of dividing the state for his own profit and finally the people who put their faith on these corrupt people end up getting nothing. No disrespect to any community or any language.

  3. This is a sad news for Belgaum, Belgaum name was give by Hazat Asad khan, he called as BE-LAGAAM, but Belgaum Muslims are not aware of this because most of us less education, struggling to feed their families and can’t give good education for their children. Once again we are feeling British rule again in the name of Karnataka Govt. they are forcing kannada language, now forcing us the name change of Belgaum to Belagavi. We are very helpless. We need Belgaum to be part of central government.
