9 children rescued by Child Helpline 1098

Nine children, engaged in rag-picking and other works, have been rescued under ‘Operation Muskan’ carried out by the Special Juvenile Police unit, District Child Protection Unit, officials of the Labour Department, and staff of the Child Helpline 1098 here on Monday.

Women police constables also accompanied the team, which traced these children from different locations, such as Mazgaon, Udyambag, Hunchenahatti, and Peeranwadi.

According to officials of Child Helpline 1908, of the nine children, seven girls below the age of 13 and a boy were rag-pickers; while another child labourer was 17 years old.

All of them have been provided shelter at the child protection unit within the premises of the Department of Women and Child Welfare in Shivaji Nagar in the city.

The Child Welfare Committee will counsel the parents to send the children to school.

Officials said the parents belonged to economically poor sections.
