PoP Ganesh Idols banned in the state

Plaster of Paris (PoP)Ganesh idols have been banned and whoever sells or purchases them will be prosecuted as per the law.

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has banned the sale of Ganesha idols made with plaster of Paris (POP) and painted with harmful chemicals under the notification dated July 20, 2016 under Section 33(A) of the Water Act, 1974, banning use of idols made of PoP and colours.

Belagavi Ganesh DarshanOffenders will have to cough up a penalty of ₹10,000 and also face imprisonment under section 45A of Water Pollution Prevention and Control Act of 1974.

The KSPCB issued a notice on July 20 which instructed the government departments, and all local governing bodies to adhere to the guidelines. It has also ordered authorities to deny licences to manufacturers selling POP-made Ganesha idols and revoke licences that were issued earlier.

Devotees have been asked to use idols made with clay devoid of chemical paints. The chemical paints use for on the idols contain water-insoluble chemicals such as lead, cadmium and chromium that are harmful to the flora and fauna in the water bodies.

  1. Must say that the authorities woke-up pretty earlier…with the festive just a month from now. As always just an eye washer to show how much they care about the environment.
