Nothing has ever changed human life as much as the advent of the internet. The whole world suddenly seems to have gotten smaller and there is a much desired platform to present ourselves and speak our mind out. Reaching out to people and organizations has never been as easy as it is today.

The polity and the governmental machinery is also trying to keep pace with the changing times as is indicated by their presence in the form of websites or spaces on social media like Facebook in order to accomplish the much desired task of reaching out to people. For the people, of the people and by the people may be just theory but there definitely are attempts to stay with the people or at least put up the face and farce of having done so.

Among the first to do this were the “Traffic Police, Belgaum” who put up a Facebook page in May 2011 and they were followed by the “ City Corporation, Belgaum”, in June 2012. The citizens suddenly had multiple platforms to express their concerns and woes with the prayer that there would be someone at the other end, waiting to take note of the same and to address the prevalent issues.
SP Sandeep Patil did leave a message saying he has been transferred and the new SP will look at this page, but the new SP hasnt shown interest in this as yet.

Come April 2013 and both these pages/ platforms suddenly went silent. Although there were a few posts from concerned citizens, the replies suddenly ceased to happen. The medium had been previously successful in addressing minor issues pertaining to traffic violations and a few road repairs, leaking water lines and drainage, to name a few but all of a sudden the silence restored the status of deaf years as has often been the complaint of citizens in town.

Was it a gimmick that had done its deed and needed no more attention or was it just a change in the party at the helm of affairs, is a mystery for us to ponder over and maybe eventually learn to accept.

While most commoners are addicts when it comes to Facebook, one can only guess that Facebook failed to instill similar habits to facilitate discussions and exchanges that would have mattered the most.

Indian politics and democracy has always been hailed as a story of “Far from the people”, “off the people” and “buy the people”. Is this just another case of returning to good old times as we have learnt to call them?

Reaching out to public and political representatives, as is, is a difficult task that most choose not to undertake on account of the time expense. The internet did provide a formal and methodical means of listening to the worries of and in certain cases even the appreciation from the citizens of Belgaum.

Have we just earned ourselves another spell of silence? I guess only time will tell. Till then it’s just you and we here at All About Belgaum and our endeavor to provide a much needed vent to the voices in town that have a lot to say about what needs to be done to make life much better in our own sweet spot in one little corner of the blue planet.
