The shortest route from Belgaum to Goa via the Chorla ghat is just about 120km. (NH4A upto Panjim is 154 kms). Beyond Goa border it’s more of a fun filled bouncy drive. But the part in Karnataka is still awaiting completion.
The deadline for the completion was May 2010 and now latest deadline is May 2012.
There have been agitations by residents of Jamboti, Kankumbi and other villages in the region, which had forced authorities in Karnataka to restart the work. But their agitations have met with little success as the work is still going at snail’s pace.
Sanchit Kittur a regular traveler on the route said,Mapusa is 112 kms and only one patch of 6.7kms is bad and rest of the road is good. So take it that about 8-10 kms of road is bad.”
As on date, a stretch of about 27 of the 51-km road has been completed, while another 18 kms between Jamboti and Kankumbi is expected to be completed by May. Even then, the Kankumbi-Chorla stretch will be left incomplete, leaving commuters to face further hardship.
Of the 51-km road, about 30.8 kms from Malaprabha Bridge near Kusmalli to Chorla comes under the reserved forests. As such, the width of 3.75 mtrs will be maintained along this stretch.
North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) authorities have arrived at a decision to restart services between Belgaum and Panjim via Chorla.
It may be recalled that both KTC and NWKRTC had stopped bus services via Chorla from June 2011 due to the creaky road.
I wish this strech of road be taken up as full fledge four lane express higway, it will certainly boost the economic throust between Belgaum and Goa…

WHY THIS REGION IS NEGLECTED BY THE GOVT.?
This is good news. We did see the road work in progress on our last two treks in that region. The work was actually happening at a good pace. We were surprised to see good tar roads on our second trek. If the Chorla section is completed before the monsoon this road will be a pleasure to ride / drive to Goa.
My only problem is that now that traffic will resume on this road the quality of the road and the maintenance are both going to be affected. Till date due to lack of any vehicular movement on this road, the condition was very good, even after enduring two monsoons.
I just hope that the road is maintained well. Else we lose a great location for cycling / photography / treks / etc.
Still the single road speeding leads to crash.. drive safe guys..

Is this same road goes via Jamboti? It was one of the worst roads a couple of years back.
