Biodiversity Park inaugurated near VTU

The Biodiversity Park, the first of its kind in North Karnataka which is being raised by forest department besides Vishvesvaraya Technological University about 15 kms away from Belagavi city on Belagavi-Goa Highway was inaugurated today.

The Biodiversity park total area is of 316 acres land near Machche village on Chorla Ghat road, this park will be open to the public very soon, all types implementation work is going on in full swing on an action plan of Rs 22-crore and proposal sent to the State Government.

The Biodiversity Park comes under ‘Nagara Vana Udyan’ project by Government of India, 80 per cent share by Central Government and twenty per cent share amount by State Government, Out the total land, 60 acres is developed by intensive gardening.

More than 350 species of saplings have been planted in the park which includes Suragi, Kadamba, Kallugaragi, kaduhippi, Rakta Chandana, Pennerale, Nagaling Pushpa, Sagadi and Kadagala Murga. The park will have children play area, jogging path, cycle path, food court, drinking water facility, permanent sitting arrangement, rest rooms, Yoga center, Meditation center, butterfly park, Topiary garden, nature interpretation center and much more.

There will theme parks of rare, endangered and threatened (RET) trees, Bamboo Centum, herbal plants, orchids, climbers, plants of medicinal values and many more in each 5 hector of land. In totality, about 45,000 plants of 300 species (Masale plants) are being planted here.

Under the guidance of Patil, Assistant Conservator of Forests Shivanand Nayakwadi, Range Forest Officer (RFO) Shrinath Kadolkar, Deputy RFO Ramesh Girappannavar and others are developing the park on war footing basis. They have handed over the painting work of drawings on boards and rocks to a team of budding artists and government drawing teachers who are being led by artist and drawing teacher Chandrakala Kargaonkar. They are doing paintings for creating awareness on the importance of nature, the importance of wildlife, the information about wildlife, the names of different species of flora and fauna and more.

This would be one of the best attractions in Belagavi.

Entry fee and timings are yet to be announced.

  1. I think they have cut forest to make way for the garden, this is not good. we need to have gardens in Cement jungles and not in forests. Don’t sacrifice forests for gardens.

  2. Dear planting of acacia trees is not forest.on contrary it degrades biodiversity .acecia trees were planted by forest dept as it was maintenance free.
