Mithila Manolkar wins prize at IAHH 2012

mitMithila Manolkar, a Belgaumite along with her team mates Sanghamitra Barthakur & Sourabh of CEPT Ahemdabad (Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology ) won the First prize (cash prize of Rs.75000) in the 10th IAHH international student design competition 2012. The results of the competition were announced on February 5 at Mumbai.

The theme given to the students was “Planning and Designing Sustainable Communities in Small Towns /Cities” and Mithila’s team presented a design of a community for 6000 people which was an extension to a small town. The site they took was Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. They tried and explored a small hill town urbanity to create a sustainable urban community.

The proposal included designs for affordable housing for different income and social groups, as found from the analysis and its supporting social, institutional and technical infrastructure. Including transportation, parking, utilities & services. Importance was given to Ecological approach towards architecture, landscape and planning incorporating bio-climatic design, eco-friendly materials and services with integrated design principles focusing on conservation and enrichment of environment.

The 10th IAHH International Student Design Competition (ISDC) focused on the theme of planning and designing a sustainable community in a small town/city with less than 1,00,000.

The event was held at Rizvi College of Architecture Mumbai.

The competition had a world renowned jury namely Dr. Peter Schreibmayer, Technical University of Graz, Austria.,Dr. David McClean, Aberdeen, U.K. Dr. Pravin Ghaemmaghami, Tehran,Iran, Prof. Bart Dewanker, Japan;  Dr. B. Shashi Bhooshan, Bangalore, India. ( The jury is subject to their confirmation and possible change.)

Currently Mithila Manolkar is studying at CEPT Ahemdabad. She did her schooling from St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Belgaum and then her architecture from Gogte institute of Technology. Mithila wants to be an architect as precise as Bernini as powerful as Le Corbu .She loves sketching and photography.

The International Association for Humane Habitat (IAHH) is a voluntary organization promoting the goals and objectives of evolving humane habitat, through sustainable development, appropriate technology, innovative design and multi-disciplinary approach to restructure policies, programming, planning and design for conservation, re-development and development.
