Pt. Anant Terdal – Hindustani Classical vocalist

 Pt. Anant Terdal is renowned name in the field of Hindustani Classical Music. Born in a family of musicians at Belgaum in 1941, Panditji was enthralled by the Hindustani Classical Music at a tender age of seven. Then onwards he has dedicated himself to the cause of Hindustani Classical Music and achieved great heights in that field.

He received his preliminary training in music from his uncle Shri. Keshavacharya and his mother, Smt. Bhagirathi. Thereafter, he came under the tutelage of Shri.Baburao Borkar, a talented Harmonium player who had a considerable impact upon him. At the same time, he had a privilege of learning vocal music from Dr.G.D.Joshi, (Sangeet Praveen) of Gwalior Gharana. Then, he learnt the nuances of Kirana Gharana from late Pt.R.N.Joshi buwa. In 1959, he got the title of Sangeet Visharad from Akhil Bharateeya Gandharva

Mahavidyalay. In 1983, Pt. Terdal became the Ganda Bandh disciple of Pt.Bhimsen Joshi – the doyen of Kirana Gharana. Since then, he has been imbibing the depths of Hindustani Classical Music from the maestro.

 

Pt. Terdal’s singing is characterized by the clarity of swaras in three octaves, thoughtful and bhava poorna rendition of ragas in both vilambit and drut layas. Along with the classical music, he is eloquent in presenting Marathi Natyageet, Bhajans, Kannada Devarnamas etc.

 

Pt. Terdal has travelled extensively within India on his musical performances under the aegis of various organizations including the prestigious Sawai Gandharva festival of Pune, Akhil Bharateeya Gandharva Mahavidyalay, Karnataka Sangeet and Nrutya Academy, Ramkrishna Sangeet Sammelan organised by the Maharashtra Lalit Kala Nidhi, Mumbai, Tansen Sangeet Sammelan – Kolkata, Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata, Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Sangeet Sammelan -Goa etc and performed along with the stalwarts of the Indian classical music including Pt.Shivkumar

Sharma, Pt.C.R.Vyas, Pt.Hariprasad Chourasia, Ustad Zakir Hussain, late Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Hafiz Ahmed Khan, Smt.Sunanda Patnaik, late Pt.Jitendra Abhisheki, Pt.Swapan Choudhari etc. The musicians, music critics and media alike have acclaimed his performances. He toured Middle-east on his musical performances organized by Maharashtra Mandal and Kannada Sangh.

 

Pt. Terdal has been performing on All India Radio since 1975. In 1981, his National Program of music was broadcast. Doordarshan and other private channels from various centres including Mumbai, Goa and Bangalore have also telecast his programmes.

Various titles have come his way recognizing his genius in Hindustani Classical music. Sur Singar Sansad gave him the title of ‘Sur Mani’. In 2001, he was honored with the title of “Kalashri” by the Karnataka State Sangeet Academy.

 

Pt. Terdal’s music is also available on cassettes and CDs. Anand Audio Cassette Company of Bangalore has released the cassettes of his devotional songs. Ganapati Bhat Music Academy, Hasanagi, has released a CD of Pt.Terdal’s classical music.

  1. Pt.Anant Terdalji is the only true & seniormost deciple of Late Pt.Bhimsen Joshiji. I am very proud that he belongs to Belgaum. Our generation didn’t got chance to see or listen Kumarji again a perl of Belgaum.But I am lucky to listen Pt.Anant Terdalji.

  2. I am from Chikodi. Glad to hear of senior trainers in Belgaum. I am interested in vocal hindustani classical music with harmonium as percussion instrument. Pl help me.
