The Archaeological Department has stopped the construction work taken up by the Income Tax Department, out side the historical monument fort in Belgaum.
Income Tax Department has proposed a office cum residential complex on the 4.5 acres of land near the Belgaum Fort. If this is constructed then this will be a violation of the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
S.V.P. Halakatti, Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Dharwad Circle, said that The planned structure falls within the “regulated area” where “no construction activity is permitted”. Citing the new law the ASI has stopped all work at the site, as no construction work should take place in 200 meter radius of the historical monuments.
