keshav iyengarKeshav Iyengar (13), a Belgaum-born boy, whose family is now settled in Cheam, London, has scored the highest score possible (162 on 162) in the Cattell III B IQ test, recognized by Mensa, the high IQ Society whose members stretch across 100 and more countries in the world.

Keshav’s mother, Dr.Jyothi Punekar holds PhD in Aeronautical Sciences and his father, Balaji Srinivasan is an alumnus of Indian institute of Science Bangalore.
Dr.Jyothi Punekar is originally from Belgaum and
She did her schooling St.Josephs high school, then GSS and then RLS college.

In an exclusive chat with AAB Dr.Jyothi Punekar shared her thoughts on Keshav’s success.

Q. How does it feel to be the parent of a “Whizkid” who falls into the genre of the Einsteins and Hawkings?

Jyothika Punekar —– > Feels very grateful.

Q. Could you describe when and how you realized that your son was “Gifted”?

Jyothika Punekar —– > He has a more than average sort of memory with numbers and any other relevant things that are interesting to him. His capacity to grasp things that interest him and to weave on them is one of his strengths. My husband Mr Balaji Srinivasan, is very instrumental in his success, particularly with his love for problems on mathematics.

Q. What factors would you attribute his genius to? Is it just inborn/inherited or does it also have to do with the upbringing?

Jyothika Punekar —– > We dont know. His curiosity I guess.

Q. How does he(Kesh) react to the appreciation and attention that he is drawing?

Jyothika Punekar —– > He is immune to the news of his appreciation. He is very modest about everything.

Q. What advice would you like to extend to parents and students in the context of the development of IQ and its relevance in the making of an individual?

Jyothika Punekar —– > Parents who think their children are above average should try and enrol for such tests and who knows we might find many more geniuses in Belgaum.

My, late father Mr N S Punekar of Belgaum always quoted Thomas gray’s elegy:

Full many a gem of purest ray serene

The dark unfathom’d caves of ocean bear:

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,

And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

Meaning many things such as human intelligence, beauty etc etc go unnoticed or unappreciated.

IQ doesn’t mean anything, There are lots of other things to succeed in life. It needs more than IQ which is one dimensional. IQ tests is only one context.
