Dr.Savita was a woman with high aspirations and big dreams. She never tolerated injustice to anyone and if her soul should rest in peace, the injustice that has happened to her should not be repeated in the years to come.
A hospital in Ireland refused to abort Dr Savita’s fetus, though she had miscarried, citing medical council guidelines which ban abortion in Ireland.
Praveen Halappanavar has now decided to take this fight to the last and see that such an incident never occurs with anyone else.
Dr. Savita Halappanavar was born in Belgaum in September 1981 and did her schooling from Vanita Vidyalaya and her PUC from RLS. She did her dentistry from KLE Dental college. She married Praveen Halappanavar in April 2008.
Andaneppa Yalagi and Akkamahadevi, parents of Savita were in Ireland and even taken her to hospital on October 21 when she had told about her back paining. But as their Visas were to expire they left on Oct 23 and reached India on 24 and Savita left this world on 28 October.
The Independent says and we quote “Tragic Savita Halappanavar was laid out in her marriage gown at her funeral, a close friend has revealed.”
Praveen said several organizations and Indians working in Ireland, especially doctors, had asked him to lead the campaign.
Savita had planned to celebrate her baby’s first birthday in Belgaum to coincide with her parents wedding anniversary, but now its only a dream.
Candle light vigils, protests are being done in Ireland and also a few are planned in Bangalore and other cities in India. About 1,000 people holding candles gathered in front of Parliament in Dublin on Wednesday. Another candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday. On December 1, a nationwide demonstration has been planned in Ireland.
As of now we have not heard of anyone protesting for this cause in Belgaum.
