Halga Macche Bypass Construction Resumes After Years Of Opposition

Work on the long-pending Macche-Halga bypass which will connect the Belagavi-Goa highway has resumed after years of opposition. Despite facing stiff opposition from a certain group of farmers for over four years, authorities have finally commenced work on the bypass, which has been pending since 2019. The 9 km bypass, once completed, is expected to bring relief to heavy traffic between Karwar, Goa, Hyderabad, and Kolhapur. Additionally, it will alleviate traffic congestion in Belagavi city caused by long-distance and heavy vehicles, resulting in significant time savings for commuters. NHAI Project Director Bhuvanesh K clarified, "There is no stay. Some individuals opposing this connectivity are spreading false rumors about the stay. The roadwork has resumed under police protection and is expected to be completed within 15 months." Pc: Prasad Parmaj "The project commenced in March 2019. The total length between Khanapur and Halaga, connecting the Pune-Bengaluru highway, spans 30 kms. Apart from the bypass, 21 kms of the project have already been completed up to Khanapur. The remaining 9.24 kms will include 5 underpasses, 1 ROB, 4 bus shelters, 6.4 kms of highway lighting, and 12.80 kms of service road.
