The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) will organise ‘Maha Melava’ here on November 25 to coincide with the first day of the winter session at Suvarna Vidhan Soudha. The authorities have denied giving Subhash Chandra Bose Grounds for the same citing a resolution passed which does not allow the use of ground for other than sports. IGP Bhaskar Rao also stated that the MES had not violated any norms in its earlier Maha Melavas. Sources told that conditional permission would be given late on Sunday to avoid more commotion.

A large number of Marathi-speaking people from Belgaum, Khanapur, and Chikkodi taluks, besides Maharashtra are expected to converge here for the melava. The MES had been organising the melava ever since the Karnataka government started holding legislature sessions in Belgaum. Also, the event was being held to protest against non-compliance of the High Court’s direction to the State government to implement provisions of Linguistic Minority Act in Belgaum, Chikkodi and Khanapur taluks.

The KRV which also wanted to hold a cultural event on Subhash Chandra Bose Grounds was also denied permission and KRV disapproves the IGP version that no norms were flouted.

The Maha Melava could be held at Vaccine Depot or at the Sambhaji Garden in Shahpur, which will be only clear after the authorities give a final go ahead.
