Dr.Savita Halappanavar originally from Srinagar, Belgaum died in university hospital, Galaway, Ireland on October 28 as she was refused abortion.
She was 17-week pregnant and had some complications, but the doctors repeatedly rejected her pleas for an abortion, citing Ireland’s orthodox ban, leading to a worsening of her condition even when it was clear that the baby could not be saved. Savita died of septicemia.
I am neither catholic nor Irish, she said before dying.
Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, 34, claimed she had complained of agonising pain while in Galway University Hospital. After a scan, doctors said the foetus would have to be aborted and yet, they refused to carry out a medical termination because the foetus’s heartbeat was present. Despite several requests for termination, they were told, “This is a Catholic country.”
She completed her graduation in dentistry from KLE Dental College, Belgaum. Her marriage to Praveen, a resident of Haveri, happened four years ago. She had done her one-year mandatory practice in Ireland. Andaneppa Sangappa Yalagi and Akkamahadevi could not hold back their tears. They were with their daughter a week before her death but they could stay back as their visa was about to be expired.
Praveen is unhappy over the behavior of Indian embassy officials after the death of his wife on October 28. “It’s the typical Indian way of handling things. Monday (a day after the death) was a government holiday and they were not willing to go out of the way to help,” he said to TOI.

THE INCIDENT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE ,BUT THE BIG QUESTION ARISES WHY DID HER HUSBAND DID NOT MAKE A RUSH TO INDIA ??????????? WHEN THE SITUATION WAS SO CRITICAL.
Travelling is not recommended during such stage of pregnancy by doctors
very unfortunate, although this incident has got wide recognition and hope it changes the system in Ireland, our indian embassy is pathetic to say the least when it comes to such issues, they have been very consistent…. spineless!!
Very unfortunate incident…. Worse on the part of the medical team there in Ireland and also irresponsible Indian embassy, who didnt help in the time of need in name of holiday
Indian embassies all over world are having same state of affairs, it is less for a common NRI and serve some elite and influential class only
The irish doctors have said that they did perform the abortion but she died due to septicemia,e.coli were isolated which are common commensals of the lower gut…i would not be surprised if they give a final report saying the cause of death was just septicemia due to e.coli.
