Are we heading towards Udta Belagavi

The recent news of various Drug peddlers being nabbed in July and also August and then the story Lady don’s drugs den in Kali Aambrai or the durg abuse in Khanjar Galli, are we heading towards a Udta Belagavi just like Udta Punjab where many youth’s have succumbed to drug abuse and en-masse resulting in a socio-economic decline.

The recent story Lady don’s drugs den in Kali Aambrai, we tried to get more info after the story was published and sources said that after the story was published no one has returned to the den in Kali Ambrai which is in the heart of the city.

However police inaction even after such grave reports in the media is also surprising. In July and earlier as the Police did nab a few drug peddlers, but we are still unclear if any action was really taken after the recent Kali Ambari report.

no-drugsDrug peddlers are targeting youth, particularly the teenagers in schools and colleges. More victims are from schools and colleges and professional institutions.

Peddlers are developing network with senior students in schools and colleges. Their modus operandi begins with luring students at pan shops located in busy junctions, wine shops and bars through agents and sell the same by packing in small sachets to students, who are smoking it through cigarettes sources said.

Similar incidents were reported from Khanjar Galli. 8 ganja peddlers arrested from Garden in Khanjar Galli after the women in the area protested. But even after the arrests sources say the drug menace has not stopped.

There has been a drastic change in the pattern of consumption from natural psychotropic substances to chemical compounds as is evident from recent cases.

It is precisely because of the police’s alleged apathy and the peddlers’ temerity now each one must turn the anti-drugs campaign into a movement.

There are many location in the city where the drugs are sold and consumed. The peddlers keep on changing their locations each day for the sales but many consumption zones remain the same such as Sardar Ground, Angol, Fort near Bhartesh and Bhaji market, Old PB road after Old Belagavi, College Road, Small lane Opposite Gogte college, Camp, Khanjar Galli to name a few.

Shocking: Children using whitener and Glue as drugs, Children who at times don’t have access to high quality drugs will use volatile substances easily found in corner stores such as cough syrups, pain relief ointments, glue, paint, gasoline and cleaning fluids. Glue and correction fluid, available legally at all stationery shops, are being used by children as young as 12, who inhale these substances to experience the rush of drugs.

Inhalants, such as correction fluid, are often used as a cheap alternative to mood-altering drugs. They put addicts at the risk of brain damage, and can cause muscle weakness, depression, headaches, nosebleeds and loss of sense of smell and hearing.
These kids look for whiteners,Glue and use it to get a high. Parents usually think it’s just station
ery.

Doctors attribute the cause to changing cultural values, increasing economic stress and dwindling supporting bonds.

It is a fact that many students are addicted to drugs and alcohol due to mental stress, family problems and poor love and affection from the parents, at the tender age. We request the parents to spend some time with their children and keep a tab on their movements.

The Police also must be proactive and nab such drug peddlers at the earliest as we dont want to see a Udta Belagavi, do we ?

  5. The root cause of the widespread drug business is police inaction (or participation?) Same all over the world. Rehab centers may soon become a side business of the same cartel. Solution? A law to make police answerable with zero tolerance to the police taking the law into their own hands – torturing beating or illegal arrests to be punished by jail term. It scares good people away. E-filing of FIRs, anonymous complaints considered as FIRs. Any negligence, willful or or undue, should result in dismissal – not suspension. And, pay them well with assured retirement benefits including housing and good pension, reimbursement of children education and healthcare expenses. Dismissal should be unaffordable.

  6. Most importantly, vote and vote correctly. Karnataka does not showcase this, irrespective of the party – BJP or Congress or JDU – the story is the same. It’s a State where a poor cannot get elected.
