Niranjan Navalgund wins National Chess Championship

Belgaum lad Master.Niranjan Navalgund clinched 22nd National Under-17 chess Championship-2011. The event was Organized by PONDICHERRY STATE CHESS ASSOCIATION On behalf of ALL INDIA CHESS FEDERATION at Puducherry from 17.07.2011 to 26.07.2011. Players from various states participated in the tournament. Niranjan, the only undefeated player in this event.Navalgund Niranjan

Niranjan pipped top-seeded International Master Narayanan Srinath on the tie-break after both won their games. Niranjan’s strong opening preparation laid a platform for a sound middle-game where he won a pawn using a back rank threat. Having an extra pawn in the bag, he sacrificed a rook for bishop on move 38 to promote a queen a couple of moves later and this forced Saumil of Maharashtra to resign.

Niranjan had bagged State Championship U -17 and Bronze medal at the SGF U-17 National championship during 2009. He has thanked all his sponsors who have boosted him to reach to this level. Now Niranjan representing Velammal Institution, Chennai.

Niranjan moved to Chennai recently and this time represented Tamil Nadu and in won his First Nationla Title.
