Belagavi’s long-pending demand for a dedicated stray dog sterilization facility has finally been met, with the district administration approving two acres of land in Hirebagewadi village for the purpose.
The land, located in Survey No. 431, was earlier earmarked for a Medical Waste Processing Centre. Following a proposal from Municipal Commissioner Shubha B., DC Mohammad Roshan issued a revised order sanctioning the space for the sterilization centre.
Currently, stray dogs caught in the city and surrounding areas are sterilized at the Municipal Corporation’s animal husbandry department facility in Srinagar. However, the limited space there has been a major hurdle. Corporator Nitin Jadhav had raised the issue in a recent general meeting, suggesting a central shelter to hold captured dogs before and after surgery. The proposal received support from the House, with Mayor Mangesh Pawar urging its approval.

Once the Hirebagewadi facility is set up, surgeries will be shifted from the cramped Srinagar site to the new, spacious premises. The move is expected to significantly improve stray dog population control in Belagavi city and suburbs.
