Belagavi/Kolkata, 26 May 2025:
In a major crackdown, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior doctor serving as an assessor with the National Medical Commission (NMC) after he was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh from representatives of a private medical college based in Belagavi, Karnataka.
The bribe was allegedly paid in exchange for a favourable inspection report of the Belagavi-based medical institute. The CBI acted swiftly, laying a trap and arresting the doctor immediately after the illicit transaction took place. Alongside the arrest, a staggering ₹44.6 lakh in additional unaccounted cash was recovered during raids conducted across multiple locations including Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Belagavi.
The CBI registered a case on 24 May 2025 against the accused senior NMC assessor, two private individuals, and the concerned Belagavi medical institute. The investigation alleges that the senior doctor demanded and accepted the bribe as a quid pro quo for certifying a favourable report during the official inspection of the institute.

CBI teams conducted extensive searches at both residential and official premises of the accused individuals, uncovering a total of ₹54.6 lakh in cash along with incriminating documents and digital evidence.
The arrested official is set to be produced before a competent court, and investigations into the nexus between medical regulators and private institutions are ongoing.
