In a proactive move to curb house thefts, the Belagavi Police have launched a new citizen-focused initiative titled the “Locked House Beat System.” The system is aimed at providing additional security to homes that remain locked when residents travel out of the city.
Under this initiative, residents planning to leave Belagavi can share key details such as their home address, Google location pin, and duration of absence via WhatsApp. The information will be handled with strict confidentiality and will be accessible only to the beat staff assigned to that specific area, particularly those on night duty.
Police officials explained that house break-ins typically occur during late-night hours when streets are deserted. Accordingly, night patrol staff will physically verify the locked houses at least twice between 1.00 am and 5.00 am, which is considered the most vulnerable window for thefts. The checks will be carried out discreetly as part of routine night beats.
Senior officers clarified that this is a preventive policing measure, not a surveillance activity, and is entirely voluntary. The initiative also strengthens coordination between citizens and beat-level police personnel, improving local vigilance and response time.
Residents wishing to avail of the facility can send the required details on WhatsApp to 8277951146 before leaving the city.
The Belagavi Police have urged citizens to make use of this free service, especially during vacations, festivals, and long absences, calling it a simple step that can significantly enhance neighborhood security.
