Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar held detailed discussions with cabinet colleagues and Congress functionaries on Saturday, focusing on the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting scheduled for December 26 in Belagavi. They also outlined plans for a massive public rally on December 27, commemorating the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership at the AICC plenary session in Belagavi in 1924.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized the significance of the upcoming events. “The CWC meeting will shape the party’s direction and its ongoing struggle for the nation’s future,” he stated after a preparatory meeting at the Chief Minister’s home office, Krishna.
Highlighting the event’s inclusivity, Shivakumar announced that all MLAs, irrespective of their party affiliations, will be invited to the unveiling of a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi will unveil the statue. Due to security restrictions, public access to this event will be restricted, with only MLAs, MPs, and invited guests permitted to attend.

The CWC meeting, set for 3 PM on December 26, will see the participation of CWC members, PCC presidents, AICC general secretaries, national office-bearers, and around 150 MPs(including former).
A grand public rally will follow on the morning of December 27, chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge. Shivakumar assured that the rally would feature speeches by several national leaders and attract party workers from across the state. “The event will symbolize the strength and unity of the Congress,” he added.
The historic relevance of Belagavi, as the site of the 39th session of the Indian National Congress presided over by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924, underscores the significance of these centenary celebrations.
Leaders from all political affiliations, including the Speaker of the Assembly and the Chairman of the Council, are expected to attend the statue unveiling. “This event is above politics, and we aim to honor Gandhiji’s legacy with broad participation,” Shivakumar remarked.
When asked about potential resolutions at the CWC meeting, he deferred to the AICC, stating, “The decision on resolutions will rest with the All India Congress Committee.”
Belagavi’s preparations for these historic events are in full swing, promising a significant moment of reflection and determination for the Congress party.
It is appropriate to hold a CWC meeting at Belagavi 0n 26th December 24 to commemorate Centenary of the leadership Mahatma Gandhi at the plenary session of AICC at Belagavi in 1924.
On this historic occasion the Karnataka government should announce a special grant of 500 crores for the development of BELAGAVI city… for roads / railway over bridges / parks / building new industrial estates etc.
If this is done the event on 26th and 27 th December will be remembered by people of Belagavi for a long time to come.
