The recently released Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 report paints a concerning picture for Belagavi (Municipal Corporation + Outgrowth areas), indicating that the city still has significant ground to cover in terms of cleanliness and sanitation standards.

National Rank #72 (Out of 95)
State Rank Rank #11 (Out of 9)

Despite several initiatives undertaken under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the city has not made notable progress compared to previous years. Key indicators across waste management, citizen participation, and sanitation infrastructure reflect middling or underwhelming performance.

Major Findings:

Garbage Free City (GFC) Star Rating: Belagavi remains at a 0-star rating, indicating that it failed to meet even the baseline requirements to qualify for a 1-star category. This is a major setback for a city of its size and administrative stature.

Source Segregation of Waste: The city has recorded a low level of waste segregation at source, a critical parameter for sustainable waste processing. Mixed waste continues to be collected from a significant portion of households, burdening the city’s waste management infrastructure.

Waste Processing Efficiency: While Belagavi has multiple waste processing units, the utilization rates remain low, and a significant portion of the city’s daily waste still ends up in landfills or remains unprocessed.

Sanitation Infrastructure: Public and community toilets, while available, suffer from maintenance and accessibility issues. Feedback from citizen surveys suggests poor upkeep and usability concerns, especially in slum areas and market zones.

Citizen Feedback: In the citizen voice and engagement segment, Belagavi received an average score, with many residents expressing dissatisfaction over garbage collection frequency, overflowing bins, and lack of grievance redressal mechanisms.

Need for Immediate Action

The data-driven audit underlines that despite the presence of infrastructure, implementation and accountability gaps persist. The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) must urgently:

Improve daily collection and door-to-door segregation coverage.

Increase citizen engagement through mobile apps and helplines.

Maintain sanitation facilities regularly.

Promote home composting and reduce dependency on landfills.

With the central government making cleanliness scores a key benchmark for urban funding and recognition, Belagavi risks missing out on both financial incentives and public trust if improvements are not swiftly initiated.

As the city continues to grow, cleanliness is not just a civic duty—it’s a marker of livability and public health. Belagavi must treat this report not as a criticism, but as a clarion call for change.

  1. One should visit RPD Cross left side towards Anagol to understand the hygiene condition. This has remained like this since 10 years.
Several officials, corporaters, MLAs, Smart city officials visit this area every day. But situation is filthy particularly in rainy season.
Hope some body notices this & take necessary action.
