In a united appeal, farmers, villagers, and public representatives from Uchagaon, Bekkinkeri, Turmuri, Sulaga, Kudremani, Ambewadi, and Hindalga Gram Panchayats have requested the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Belagavi to prioritize the repair and expansion of the Belagavi-Vengurla State Highway. They urge the authorities to widen the road to four lanes, particularly the stretch from Belagavi to the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, citing dire safety concerns.

This section, part of the Raichur-Bachi State Highway that spans approximately 15-16 kilometres, has been neglected for a long time. The villagers noted that the current condition of the road is worse than ever, rendering it extremely hazardous for commuters. The highway plays a crucial role as a connector to Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri districts, and also links to Goa, witnessing heavy traffic daily.

Thousands of vehicles, including state transport buses, trucks, two-wheelers, and even pedestrians, traverse this damaged road regularly. Adding to the burden, around 150-200 trucks from the Belagavi Municipal Corporation and the Belagavi Cantonment Board use this route to transport waste to the Turmuri Garbage Depot, further deteriorating its condition.

The villagers expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents occurring on this stretch, which is endangering the lives of innocent people. The road serves as a vital lifeline for students, workers, farmers, and residents of approximately 35-40 villages in Belagavi Taluka, in addition to being essential for neighbouring Maharashtra and Goa.

The local community has made an urgent plea to the government, hoping for swift action to repair and expand the highway to a safer four-lane road, ensuring smoother travel and safeguarding lives.

  1. Though it is late action taken by the villagers anyway late but not the least. Many politicians may have also traveled through this road ruling and non ruling but never thought of repairing the road. Many innocent people’s loosed their lifes, Many got injured, Many of the people’s vehicles got damaged. Shame on the governance of Belgaum corporation and ruling leaders. These leaders only appear in front of people’s at time of election, show courtesy, Commit peoples of overall development and well being of the citizens. Hope they take action immediately.🙏
