Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the Samadhi of Veera Rani Kittur Chennamma, located in Bailahongala taluk of Belagavi district, as a monument of national importance under The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
In his letter, the Chief Minister highlighted Rani Chennamma’s unparalleled role in India’s freedom struggle. She was among the first women to lead an armed resistance against British colonial rule in 1824. “Her valor and sacrifice remain an enduring source of inspiration for generations,” Siddaramaiah stated.
He emphasized that the Samadhi is not merely a resting place but a historical and cultural symbol of India’s fight for independence. However, despite its significance, the site lacks proper conservation efforts. A national monument status would ensure better preservation, increased visibility, and promote cultural tourism, benefiting the local economy.

The Chief Minister urged the Union Government to expedite the process through the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), ensuring that the site receives the recognition and protection it deserves.
