Amid rising public discontent over the diversion of water from the Hidkal reservoir to industrial areas in Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi District Guardian Minister Satish Jarkiholi has said that the issue will be taken up with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for reconsideration. Speaking to the media at the Zilla Panchayat Office, Jarkiholi acknowledged that tenders for the controversial project were floated before the matter was brought to his notice.

“The decision to divert water from the Hidkal dam to the Hubballi-Dharwad industrial estate was made without informing us. I had suggested halting the project, but the concerned department has already granted permission. I will discuss this with the Chief Minister,” he said.

The minister noted that several organizations, farmers’ groups, and citizens from the Belagavi region have submitted memorandums opposing the project. They fear it could compromise the district’s own water needs.

“We have received requests from the public and various institutions urging us not to allow this scheme. The issue will be thoroughly reviewed at the government level,” he assured.

Jarkiholi also responded to concerns raised by environmental and farmer groups over the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project, particularly the proposed diversion of water to the Navilutirth Dam in Savadatti.

“During our recent visit to Khanapur, environmental activists submitted a memorandum to me and Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre. They raised valid concerns about deforestation and the loss of green cover due to the project. I intend to discuss this matter with the Deputy Commissioner shortly,” he said.

Other District Concerns
Shifting focus to infrastructure, the minister commented on the deteriorating condition of roads due to ongoing National Highway construction works in Nipani, Hattargi, and Sankeshwar.

“Last time, heavy rains caused severe damage to service roads. Though they were repaired, the condition has worsened again. I will be instructing National Highway Authority officials to take immediate action,” Jarkiholi said.

He also addressed frequent accidents near Hirebagewadi Ghat in Belagavi taluk.

“This area sees repeated accidents. I will be directing the Transport Department to install appropriate signage and take preventive safety measures,” he added.
