A horrifying incident of assault and public humiliation came to light on Saturday, November 16, 2024, after a video of a woman and her daughter being disrobed and attacked by neighbors went viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred on November 11 in the Waddarawadi area of Belagavi, sparking outrage across the city.
Based on the victim’s complaint, the Malamaruti Station Police have registered a case against three individuals: Indra Ashtekar, Huvappa Ashtekar, and Manikanth Ashtekar. The young woman alleged that she and her mother were dragged out of their home late on Monday night, stripped, and assaulted by the accused, who accused them of being involved in prostitution.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rohan Jagadish, who visited the scene of the crime on Saturday, termed the incident as “unfortunate” and informed the media that four teams have been formed to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The victims also alleged that their initial complaint was ignored by the Malamaruti Police. “If any negligence on the part of the police is established, strict action will be taken,” assured the DCP during a press briefing.
According to sources, the woman, a native of Waddarawadi, had returned to live with her mother after facing alleged mistreatment in her marital home in Maharashtra. She has two children and was striving to rebuild her life when this shocking incident occurred.
The case has raised serious questions about the safety of women and the role of societal prejudices in fueling such violence. Investigations are ongoing.
