The blackbuck death toll at the Rani Chennamma Zoo in Belagavi has risen to 29, after one more blackbuck died today (Sunday). Out of the 38 blackbucks in total, 29 have died and only 9 remain.

Veterinarian Dr. Nagesh said the preliminary diagnosis points to a bacterial and viral infection, though the exact cause will be known only after the laboratory report arrives.

“Blackbucks have been dying for the last two to three days. We have administered the necessary medicines and conducted autopsies. Samples have been sent to the Bannerghatta Zoo lab, and we are awaiting the report,” he said.

He clarified that the remaining animals have not shown signs of infection. “We have followed all quarantine protocols and intensified monitoring and treatment until the lab findings come,” he added.

Dr. Nagesh also consulted Dr. Shashidhar of Mysuru Zoo regarding the symptoms and treatment approach. “The exact problem will be confirmed once the report is received,” he said.
