In a significant move towards enhancing convenience and transparency in the registration of marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Karnataka state government has introduced an online system that allows couples to register their marriage from the comfort of their homes. This initiative marks a remarkable shift from the traditional requirement of physically visiting sub-registrar offices, streamlining the process through digital means.
Under the newly implemented system, couples can generate their marriage certificate by simply providing their wedding invitation, video footage of the wedding ceremony, and Aadhaar authentication. This innovation eliminates the need for couples to navigate the bureaucratic complexities of visiting government offices and ensures a seamless and efficient registration process.

The state government has empowered the Inspector General of Registration and Commissioner of Stamps to utilize Aadhaar authentication for marriage registrations, further bolstering the security and authenticity of the process. Unlike the previous practice confined to sub-registrar offices, couples now have the flexibility to submit their applications at designated Bapuji Seva Kendra and Grama One Centers, making the process more accessible to a wider population.
To harness the potential of technology for simplifying administrative procedures, the government has announced amendments to the Hindu Marriage Registration Act, facilitating online registrations through the utilization of Kaveri 2 software.
Speaking on the significance of this reform, minister Byregowda, highlighted the shift towards a more user-friendly and efficient system. “At present, a couple is required to visit a sub-registrar’s office and furnish evidence of marriage such as a photograph and wedding invitation,” Gowda explained. “Under the online system, we’ll require Aadhaar authentication of the couple and evidence (photo and wedding invitation) that can be uploaded. Based on this, the registration certificate will be sent to the couple.”
With the introduction of this online system, couples can now embark on their marital journey without the hassle of bureaucratic hurdles, marking yet another step towards a more progressive and digitally-enabled society.
