In a move that is expected to hit the pockets of vehicle owners across Karnataka, the state government has announced a significant hike in fuel prices. Effective immediately, petrol prices will increase by ₹3 per liter, while diesel prices will see an increment of ₹3.02 per liter. This decision comes shortly after the recent Lok Sabha elections, raising concerns among the public and opposition parties about the timing and necessity of the hike.

The state government has attributed this price increase to a revision in the Sales Tax, which may be a measure that is essential to fund various guarantee schemes promised during the election campaign. These schemes, which include subsidies for farmers, financial assistance for women, and infrastructure development projects, require substantial financial resources.

However, the decision has not been well received by the public. Many citizens expressed their frustration over the sudden hike, citing the increased cost of living and economic pressures. “This is unfair to the common man. Just after the elections, we are hit with this burden. The government should have considered the impact on daily commuters and small businesses,” said Prasad.

The transport sector, in particular, is expected to feel the brunt of this increase. With fuel being a significant component of operational costs, many transport companies might pass on the additional expense to consumers, leading to higher prices for goods and services.

  1. All Govts must provide the details of income vs expenditure in detail and to be necessary rather than saying to fund projects. Such transparency will be good for all
