Fed up with increasing instances of public nuisance and antisocial activities, the villagers of Savgaon recently staged a protest march to the District Collectorate and Police Commissioner’s office. Their demand? Immediate and sustained action against drunken youths and couples frequently seen engaging in objectionable activities in the farms and dam area along Nanawadi Road.

Following the protest, the Belagavi Rural Police temporarily increased patrolling in the affected areas, which provided some relief. However, this patrolling was short-lived, and with its withdrawal, the situation reportedly worsened. Residents observed a surge in the number of drug users and couples frequenting secluded spots once again.

The situation recently escalated when a group of local youths confronted a couple in the farm area and attempted to chase them away. The matter took a controversial turn, and the youths were booked under charges of moral policing. This incident further fuelled the villagers’ frustration, prompting yet another protest march demanding effective action against the real troublemakers — not the concerned residents trying to protect their community.

Villagers report that for the past few years, the dam area has turned into a hotspot for ‘wet parties’ — where alcohol is consumed openly, music blares, and broken glass bottles litter the surroundings. With cashew and mango harvesting season underway, many farmers, especially women, are working in the fields — but the presence of intoxicated youths has created an atmosphere of fear and discomfort.

Despite complaints, the police seemed to have turned a blind eye until the villagers raised their voices. Though some checking was carried out on Nanawadi Road — including document verification and questioning of travelers — it has now led to a new issue. Locals allege that in the name of enforcement, fines are being collected from vehicle drivers indiscriminately, adding to their woes.

The villagers are now demanding that senior police officials take serious note of the situation and ensure continuous patrolling in the area to restore peace and safety.
