Survey says 65% people want helmets to be made compulsory

61% of the students do not own a helmet and

65% of the people accept the implementation of helmets with regularity in Belgaum.

Prof.Nitin J Maniyal  Lecturer, Jain College, Belgaum has done a survey on helmets and what the citizens want.

The survey has shown some surprising results, where majority of the sample accepted the implementation of helmets with continuity, being its important suggestion. The public here has been reluctant to follow the traffic rules, at the same time it would be unfair if only the public is blamed for the sole cause, it would be appropriate when the blame is shared with its imposition also. Imposing it for a few days and then nobody bothers to keep a check on it, the public laughs at such practices.

The survey has shown two third of the sample possessed a helmet whereas the remaining did not even bother to buy a helmet, of those two third who owned a helmet 60% of them wear it irregularly. The remaining who wear it regularly had self responsible safety and the others wore it only at the time when cops where installed.

Those set of respondents who owned a helmet but never wore it stated various reasons like uncomfortable to ride, traffic rules were not strict and helmet did not act as a safety tool, I have personal belief; when its mandatory there are no options or no excuses. Those set of respondents who never owned a helmet had similar answers as mentioned above, in addition some responded as they were unaware of its compliance.

When the respondents were classified based on gender, it showed almost similar results. Further when the respondents were classified based on occupation those people at service yielded the best results with more than 80% owned a helmet. It has not come as a surprise but actually the truth, majority of the students never owned a helmet, and I strongly believe some implementation of strictness of helmets should be taken up by institutions as it is a part of social responsibility.

When the respondents were classified under different age groups it again yielded similar answers, in the age group of 18 to 24 majority of them did not own a helmet, whereas in the age group of 25 to 35 almost all of them own and wear a helmet.

This has come as a surprise 130 respondents out of 196 respondents accepted to implement strict traffic rules in Belgaum, and the remaining 66 respondents denied of implementation of strict traffic rules as they were reluctant to change.

So hereby I conclude that 65% of the residents of Belgaum are willing to accept the implementation with regularity for wearing of helmets, majority of the students fall under the category of not owning a helmet and irregularly wearing of those who own. This makes me give a strong appeal that all the institutions should work towards the implementation for having a safe, peaceful and a healthy society.

1. 1.       65.48% of people own a helmet whereas 34.52% of people did not even bother to buy a helmet.
2. 2.       78.46% of people who own a helmet wear it while riding the bike, whereas 21.54% of people do not wear a helmet.
3. 3.       60% of people wear their helmet irregularly, whereas only 40% of the people wear their helmet regularly.
4. 4.       The total number irregular respondents were 61, out of which 44 respondents wore it for self responsible safety and the rest wore it only during the cops were penalizing across the roads. 
5. 5.       The total number of respondents who did not wear their helmets despite they owned were 28, of which 20 respondents said it was uncomfortable to ride, 7 responded as strict traffic rules were not observed and one respondent said wearing a helmet did act as a safety measure.
6. 6.       76 respondents who did not buy a helmet, of which 43 responded as uncomfortable to ride, 19 responded as traffic rules are not strict, 10 responded as wearing of helmets did not act as a measure of safety and 4 of them responded that they were unaware of helmet compliance.
7. 7.       Out of 167 male respondents, 54 did not buy a helmet, 113 owned it of which 91 wear it regularly and 22 respondents wear it irregularly
8. 8.       Out of 29 female respondents, 13 did not buy a helmet, 16 owned it of which 10 wear it regularly and 6 respondents wear it irregularly
9. 9.       It has not come as a surprise but actually the truth, out of 56 student respondents only 22 owned helmets and 34 did not own, some implementation of strictness of helmets should be taken up by institutions as it is a part of social responsibility
10. 10.   20 Professional Respondents 14 owned a helmet and 6 did not, out of 38 self employed respondents 25 owned a helmet and 13 did not, and those at service 65 owned a helmet compared to 14 who did not own.
11. 11.   out of 70 respondents who fall under the age group of 18 to 24, 31 respondents owned a helmet whereas 39 of them did not own one for them, 44 respondents fall under the age group of 25 to 35  of which 37 owned a helmet and 7 did not, 40 respondents fall under the age group of 36 to 45 of which 30 owned a helmet and 10 did not own and lastly 42 respondents fall under the age group if 46 and above of which 31 owned a helmet and 11 did not.
