Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah on Monday reviewed two key urban infrastructure projects in Belagavi—the Turmuri Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal Unit and the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Halaga—emphasising scientific waste management, environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
At the Turmuri Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal Unit of the Belagavi City Corporation, the Minister inspected the collection, processing and disposal of solid waste. Officials informed him that around 238 tonnes of solid waste are scientifically processed at the facility every day. The plant produces 12 to 16 tonnes of organic manure daily, which is supplied to farmers, while the remaining non-recyclable waste is converted into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and supplied to cement factories.
Dr. Siddaramaiah said greater priority should be given to converting waste into useful resources, noting that effective solid waste management not only keeps the city clean but also contributes to environmental conservation.
The Minister later visited the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant under construction at Halaga in Belagavi taluk. After reviewing the project’s progress, quality and technical aspects, he said the work is about 90% complete and directed officials to expedite the remaining works so that the plant can be commissioned at the earliest.
He said the sewage treatment project will play a crucial role in strengthening scientific wastewater management, improving urban sanitation and protecting the environment.
Officials briefed the Minister on the implementation status and technical features of both projects during the inspections.
