The Belagavi City Corporation has been allotted one acre of land at Savgaon in Belagavi taluk to establish a permanent sterilisation centre for stray dogs. The land, owned by the Revenue Department, has been formally transferred to the civic body through the District Collectorโs Office.
The Corporation has prepared a proposal to establish the centre and submitted it to the District Collector for approval. Construction is expected to begin once the proposal and plan receive the necessary clearances. According to the Health Department, the civic body has sufficient funds for the project.
The proposed site is located away from residential areas, with cemeteries on two sides and private land on another. The Health Department believes the location is suitable for the facility and is unlikely to face opposition from nearby residents.
Hirebagewadi centre to continue temporarily
Stray dog sterilisation surgeries are currently being conducted at a temporary shed in Hirebagewadi. However, the centre has faced opposition and is located at a considerable distance from the city. The civic body has therefore decided to shift the facility to Savgaon once the permanent centre is ready.
The decision followed a meeting held at the Municipal Corporation office last month, during which officials also inspected the proposed Savgaon site and found it suitable.
Earlier, sterilisation surgeries were regularly conducted at a centre in Srinagar in Belagavi. However, opposition from corporator Lakshmi Rathod led to the closure of that facility, forcing the civic body to shift operations to Hirebagewadi as a temporary arrangement.

Sterilisation operations at Hirebagewadi will continue until the Savgaon centre is established.
26 stray dog feeding zones established
The allotment of land marks a step towards creating a dedicated facility for managing the city’s stray dog population. The Municipal Corporation has also established 26 designated feeding zones for stray dogs across Belagavi.
Further action on the sterilisation centre will depend on approval of the submitted proposal and plan by the District Collectorโs Office.
