Emphasizing the urgent need to prevent road accidents and ensure efficient traffic flow, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan directed concerned departments to take immediate and coordinated action for road safety in Belagavi district.

Presiding over the District Road Safety Committee meeting held at the DC office on Wednesday, Roshan said, “A strategic and safety-first approach is crucial for managing the city’s growing traffic. An actionable and well-coordinated road safety plan must be implemented without delay.”

He stressed that the Police, Transport, and Public Works Departments must work together to improve traffic conditions across the district. Currently, 22 traffic signals are operational, and plans are in place to construct flyovers at seven major junctions in Belagavi city.

The DC instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) to invite tenders from planning agencies and move forward with preparing a comprehensive traffic management project. He insisted that before the tendering stage, agencies submitting project reports must strictly adhere to prescribed guidelines. An estimated 4 km of flyovers are proposed under this plan, and the Member Secretaries of the Road Safety Committee have been asked to ensure timely completion of the tendering process.

Project Planning Based on Kalaburagi Model

Roshan noted that Kalaburagi district had already implemented a phased approach—short-term, medium-term, and long-term—to traffic management through a Detailed Project Report (DPR). “A similar model will be adapted for Belagavi to address urban traffic issues and enhance road safety comprehensively,” he added.

Integrating AI for Smarter Traffic Management

In a forward-looking suggestion, a technical assistant from the PWD proposed the use of Artificial Intelligence to analyze vehicle movement patterns. Bagalkot district is already leveraging AI-based software to track and classify two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and buses at traffic signals.

“If AI-powered smart cameras are installed under the Smart City project in Belagavi, it would be possible to collect real-time traffic data, helping authorities to manage congestion more effectively,” the official added.

The meeting concluded with a strong push for adopting modern tools and enforcing accountability to create a safer, more efficient traffic system for Belagavi.

  1. I would request the concerned to first improve the quality of roads. There are potholes all over main roads in the city. The third gate ROB is in a very dilapidated condition. There is no mention of completion of existing incomplete works. The other side of 3 rd gate ROB is still not completed. Adding to the problem, the department has planned to construct the underpass near the 4 th railway gate. There is no proper planning. Citizens are not involved at all.

  7. Not a single road in the city of Belagavi is in condition. Rural roads are even worse. There have been a couple of serious accidents and even deaths in Khanapur taluka recently. Every citizen of Belagavi is sure to have back and neck problems in the long run. Many of us already do. The administration may kindly address this matter of setting right the condition of roads first. Also all rumblers and speed breakers may please be redesigned based on correct size, height and width and maintained with regular painting. Not a single one is correct in design.

  8. Much of the traffic in the city of Belagavi and in the district will move smoothly if existing roads and speed breakers are first repaired and maintained.
The work of L and T in cantonment area is the shoddiest. They should be booked for substandard work post laying of water pipes. High Street and Cattle Road are examples.
