Belagavi is set to get a major infrastructure boost with the construction of a 7.8-kilometre-long flyover aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the city.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan confirmed that the project is being taken up jointly by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Of the total length, about 6.67 kilometers will be built under the PWD’s National Highway division, while 1.12 kilometers will fall under NHAI’s jurisdiction.

The proposed flyover will link key junctions, including Ashoka Circle, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, Rani Channamma Circle, and extend up to Dharmveer Sambhaji Maharaj Circle. “The flyover will be constructed at an average height ranging from 9.5 to 13 meters to ensure commercial activities below are not disturbed and shop signboards remain visible, similar to metro flyovers in Bengaluru and Delhi,” Roshan said.

The new structure will provide direct entry into the city from the national highway, eliminating the current dependence on service roads. It will also enable seamless travel from Belagavi towards Dharwad, Kolhapur, and Sambra Airport.

Planning for the project has been underway for nearly seven months, with active involvement from the PWD Minister, senior engineers, local MLAs, and public representatives. Feedback from citizens was also taken into account during the design stage.

The estimated cost of the flyover stands at ₹260 crore, with the state PWD already allocating ₹200 crore towards the project.

“This project is a big step forward in improving Belagavi’s road infrastructure and easing traffic movement in one of the fastest-growing cities of North Karnataka,” Roshan added.

  2. Respected Deputy Commissioner sir,
I, Sunil Sanikop, Advocate, Belagavi, most humbly request that you are aware of the fact that we, the lawyers have recently approached your office and requested you to plan a mega Court building, instead of a small construction work. The Ring Road project is already under implemention. If Courts and other administrative offices of Belagavi are established on the outskirts of the city, the traffic problem in the city will be reduced to a considerable extent. Therefore, I am of the opinion that the flyover road project may not be necessary. If I am correct, then my suggestion is that instead of implementing the flyover road project, the same project money can be used for the construction of a mega court building and administrative buildings on the outskirts of the city. Please consider it if you find it appropriate,
    Thanking you sir,
    Yours sincerely,
    Sunil Sanikop, Advocate, Belagavi

  4. I tend to agree with Adv Sanikop. The proposed flyover from the NH may be restricted up to Ashoka Circle with an Arm going into Central Bus Stand. The shifting of Court Complex and the offices of Sub Registrar and a few other departments to the CPED Ground will definitely improve the traffic problem between RTO Circle and Rani Channamma Circle, besides retaining the heritage look at the Channamma Circle.
