The long-awaited vegetable market at Khasbagh is finally set to open soon; half of the stalls will be dedicated to vegetable vendors. The remaining stalls will be allocated to the tannery society, as well as businesses dealing in cosmetics, leather bags, and other trades. MLA Abhay Patil provided this update on Saturday.
MLA Patil has actively followed up on the construction of the vegetable market under the Smart City Scheme. Located on the road connecting Nath Pai Circle to Basaveshwar Circle, the market’s construction was completed some time ago. However, the facility was never officially transferred to the Municipal Corporation and remained unused for years, occasionally repurposed for drying clothes.
The high-quality construction by the Smart City department, including sturdy cemented pathways and a strong, well-designed roof, ensures that the market will be in demand. Recently, MLA Patil, accompanied by local corporators, inspected the site and confirmed that the transfer and stall distribution process will soon move forward. After nearly five years of lying idle, the market is now expected to become fully operational.

A dedicated road and footpath have been prepared to ensure smooth access. On one side, vegetable vendors will set up shop, while the other side will be reserved for the tannery community. Shops allocated for cosmetic businesses have glazed fronts to enhance their appeal.

MLA Patil also assured that if required, MLA funds would be used to support the project. He further claimed that no similar market exists in North Karnataka. However, he did not specify an exact timeline for when the transfer of ownership and stall allotments will take place.
