The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has clarified that there is currently no proposal to establish or upgrade a Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional or Training Centre in Belagavi.

Replying to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha by MP Iranna Kadadi on January 29, Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated that sports is a State subject and the primary responsibility for promotion and development rests with State governments. The Centre, he said, only supplements state efforts, and no proposal from Karnataka has been received for setting up an SAI centre in Belagavi.

The Ministry also informed the House that no central assistance proposal has been submitted for the development of sports infrastructure at Rani Channamma University, Belagavi

On the Fit India Movement, the government revealed that 218 schools in Belagavi district are registered under the Fit India programme, indicating growing participation at the school level.

Regarding traditional sports, the Centre said that disciplines such as Kushti (wrestling) and Kabaddi are being supported in Karnataka through the Sports Training Centre (STC) at Dharwad. In addition, the Khelo India Scheme includes a dedicated component for the promotion of rural, indigenous, and tribal games to revive traditional sports across the country.

The Ministry also clarified the status of the Youth Hostel at Sogal in Belagavi district, stating that it is functional and currently in use. However, no proposal for its upgradation or renovation is under consideration at present.

The reply highlights that while Belagavi has participation in national fitness initiatives, major sports infrastructure upgrades will depend on proposals and initiatives from the State government.
