Belagavi has lost one of its most respected cultural promoters with the passing of Anant Jangle, a calm, warm-hearted and ever-smiling personality who dedicated over five decades to theatre, cinema and social service.
Born into a family deeply rooted in public service, Anant Jangle was the son of Ramchandra Jangle, a senior freedom fighter from Anandwadi. The values of social commitment and community involvement were instilled in him from a young age. Though he studied electrical engineering and initially explored various business avenues, his true calling eventually emerged in the world of entertainment โ particularly theatre, cinema and orchestral performances.
Over the last 50 years, Jangle organized countless theatre productions and musical orchestra shows under the banner of Melody Makers and other platforms. His work extended beyond Belagavi to Karnataka, Goa, the Konkan region and Maharashtra. He also played a key role in screening several popular films across theatres in Belagavi.
At a time when heavy taxation made staging Marathi plays in the border region financially difficult, Jangle continued to organize performances with determination, ensuring that theatre lovers in Belagavi continued to enjoy quality cultural entertainment.
His contribution to theatre and Marathi culture earned him the recognition of being regarded as a โSenior Theatre Personality.โ He served as a Director of the School of Culture and was also associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Natya Parishad, where he served as President of the Belagavi branch. In recognition of his five decades of service to theatre, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the All India Theatre Conference held in Mumbai in 2018. He was also felicitated during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Melody Makers in Pune.
Beyond theatre, Jangle was actively involved in several social and cooperative institutions in Belagavi. He served the historic Sarvajanik Vaachnalaya, which has a legacy of more than 150 years, in various roles including President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary, and was serving as a Director.
In the cooperative sector, he was associated with Tukaram Cooperative Bank, where he served as a Director for nearly three decades since 1995.
Jangle also had a keen interest in agriculture and personally supervised the management of his farms. A passionate traveller, he visited several countries and developed a deep appreciation for global cultures.
During a performance of the Marathi play โEka Lagnachi Goshtaโ in Toronto, noted actor Prashant Damle publicly acknowledged Jangleโs contribution to the theatre world.
His involvement with community organisations was equally significant. He served the Maratha Samaj Sudharana Mandal for over two decades, including terms as Vice President and President. He was also an active member of the Giants Group of Belgaum Main for more than 25 years and served as its President three times, besides holding key positions in the state executive of the Giants Federation.
Deeply connected to his locality, Jangle remained actively involved in social initiatives in Anandwadi and associated with institutions such as Hind Housing Society, Hind Cooperative Society, Hind Social Club, and Sports Club in Hindwadi. He also served as an advisor to the Mukti Dham Seva Sudharana Mandal, which works for the development of the Shahapur crematorium.
Known for his gentle nature, calm demeanour and ever-smiling personality, Anant Jangle built a reputation that went far beyond theatre.
