In a significant tribute to one of Belagavi’s respected educationists, Mahila Vidyalaya Mandal’s MVM English Medium School was officially renamed Prabhatai Deshpande English Medium School at a ceremony held on Thursday. The event coincided with the institution’s 55th anniversary and the 95th birth anniversary of the late Prabhatai Deshpande.
The renaming marks the culmination of a long-standing effort to formally recognize the woman whose vision helped shape English-medium education within the Mahila Vidyalaya Mandal (MVM) family.
A Century-Old Institution
The story of the school is closely linked with the history of Mahila Vidyalaya Mandal itself. Founded on May 25, 1923, under the inspiration of Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, the institution was established to promote women’s education in Belagavi. The first Mahila Vidyalaya School began with just three students and gradually evolved into one of the city’s most respected educational institutions.
Over the decades, Mahila Vidyalaya nurtured generations of students and produced distinguished alumni who excelled in diverse fields across India and abroad.

Prabhatai Deshpande’s Contribution
In the late 1970s, educator Prabhatai Deshpande merged her English-medium school with Mahila Vidyalaya, helping expand the institution’s reach and educational offerings. Her dedication to discipline, honesty, value-based education and the holistic development of students became defining characteristics of the school.
Speaking at Thursday’s ceremony, institution office-bearers recalled her lifelong commitment to education and described her as a visionary who transformed the lives of countless students. Family members and alumni remembered her as a strict disciplinarian with a compassionate heart who devoted her life to the growth of the institution.
Chief guest and alumna Dr. Leena Bhomaj noted that Mahila Vidyalaya was not merely an educational institution but a place where students were shaped through culture, values and character-buildingโprinciples that Prabhatai Deshpande consistently championed.
Celebrating the Legacy
The event was presided over by Mahila Vidyalaya Mandal President Bhagwandas Kapadia, while Chairman Adv. Sachin Bichhu and Vice-President Adv. Vivek Kulkarni reflected on the institution’s journey and Prabhatai Deshpande’s enduring influence.
As part of the celebrations, the school’s new bus and the institution’s newly renovated modern office were also inaugurated.
With the renaming, Mahila Vidyalaya Mandal has formally embedded Prabhatai Deshpande’s name into the institution she helped build, ensuring that future generations of students continue to remember the educator whose vision and values shaped the school’s identity.
