The Londa to Miraj rail line doubling has commenced and in lieu of the same the Railway authorities have written to the Belagavi city corporation to demolish the existing British built Over bridge commencing at Gogte Circle and finishing at Maratha Mandir.
Due to the doubling of the rail line, the new RoB will be four laned sources said.
It may be noted that the said Bridge was built by the British and work commenced in 1901 and work was completed in 1905. In 2005 the company which had built the said bridge which has its office in England sent a letter to the Corporation stating that the guarantee of the bridge is over and it would be better if a new one is constructed and the company has no responsibility hence forth.
It is also planned to have a RoB in lieu of the 3rd gate but that will commence later. The existing bridge will have to be first demolished and then the work on the new one can be commenced and hence the traffic will be diverted from Congress road then.
Not in the near future …no political will
This is an important landmark and piece of history of Belgaum, is there a way to save it ?
We can ask the same company to rebuild the new bridge, so that it will last another 100 years..
Try to preserve it..
