Belagavi Cantonment has proposed renaming 34 roads as part of an initiative to honour Indian heroes and martyrs, replacing street names associated with British officers. This proposal, introduced by nominated Cantonment Board member Sudhir Tupekar, aims to commemorate soldiers and figures who contributed to the nation’s independence and defence. The decision was taken at the Cantonment Board meeting on July 15, where the board approved the renaming effort pending public feedback.

The Cantonment Board has invited citizens to submit objections or comments on the proposed changes within 30 days. Citizens who voice their concerns can visit the Cantonment Board office to register their objections formally. Once this period concludes, the board will finalize and implement the new names.

  1. Good move , Suggest BMC to share in brief about the contribution of these national heroes
Small display of plates at both ends of roads on heroes contribution to nation in Kannada / Marathi preferred

  2. The initiative to rename 34 roads in Belagavi Cantonment in honor of national heroes is a commendable step towards recognizing and celebrating the contributions of these individuals. This not only enhances the cultural identity of the area but also promotes a sense of pride among residents. Such developments in road and area naming can foster community engagement and awareness of national history.

  3. I’d like to share a thought about St. Anthony’s Street. I believe it would be wonderful to keep the name as it is, as it has no ties to colonialism. Instead, it reflects the spirit of the vibrant Christian community around St. Anthony’s Church in Camp. The name honors Saint Anthony and the warmth of the community that cherishes him. Alternatively, we could consider renaming the road next to the church as St. Anthony’s Street. Either way, it would be a beautiful way to celebrate our local heritage. Just a heartfelt suggestion! Thank you for considering it!

    Just a humble suggestion 🙂

  4. I hope the board of Cantonment doesn’t forget the purpose of these roads & maintains it in good condition from time to time. Or else, I am sorry to say but it won’t be an honour anymore.

  5. What’s the point of it? This looks more like excluding of minorities especially the Christian community… want to take the identity away. There is an obvious pattern where all English names are being taken out, if there is such a problem with English why even have English education and enroll your children into Christian schools? Because y’all want more opportunities but are still against the language. What irony is this!?Rather focus on development and providing proper resources. The cantonment barely keeps up with light & water but considers name changing an issue. We already have the street names engraved in our house name plates etc. We don’t want any changes.
