The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine across the country in protest against the brutal rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The protest will start at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, 2024, and conclude at 6 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024, according to a statement from IMA Belagavi has also supported this and will withdraw their services for 24 hours while All emergency services will remain functional.

An young Doctor was brutally raped and killed on duty in R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata on 9″ August 2024. It is appalling to note that the situation was made worse by authorities by trying to destroy evidence as noted by the H’ble High court of Calcutta.

Other doctors who were holding peaceful protest to seek justice for their colleague faced the wrath of a flash mob and ran helter shelter, many of whom injured again. The attack further continued to ensure the hospital and the crime scene was vandalized.

Such physical assaults and crimes are a result of indifference and insensitivity of the government towards doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers.

Considering the chain of events, apathy of authorities and being repeatedly victimized & humiliated, we the doctors of Indian Medical Association declare withdrawal of non essential services from 6 am 17.08.2024 to 6 am 18.08.2024 in Belagavi.

IMA is seeking:

1. Speedy Justice for our colleague

2. Safe working environment

3. Laws to counter such incidents with a Iron fist

Note: All emergency services will remain functional. Routine OPDs and elective surgeries will be non-available.
