Celebrate Diwali without crackers

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum had organized ‘WALKATHON’ in Belgaum, on the eve of Diwali to create awareness on the ill-effects of air and noise pollution due to bursting of crackers.About 500 PG students of VTU participated in the Walkathon.

On this occasion, Dr. S. A. Kori, Registrar, said, “Diwali is an important festival and we can celebrate it by lighting lamps and by organizing other festivities. We should avoid bursting crackers during the festival as it leads to air and noise pollution”.Dewali 1

Some of the effects on the Environment are Excessive Air Pollution, Excessive Noise Pollution, Soil Pollution, Excessive Power Consumption and Consumerism. Besides these environmental effects the modern style of celebrating Diwali also leads to various health hazards. Some of the major health hazards are Hearing Loss, High Blood Pressure, Sleeping Disturbances, Asthma, Headache, Irritability, Skin Allergies, Fatigue, Eye Related Problems and Respiratory Problems”.

Walkathon started at Chennamma Circle and ended at Bogarways Circle.
