A central team for the Swachh Survekshan 2025 will arrive in Belagavi on Monday (March 10) to assess the city’s cleanliness efforts. The Belagavi Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been notified about the visit, and a five-member team from the central government will conduct the survey.

Belagavi’s Performance in Swachh Survekshan

In the 2023 rankings, Belagavi was placed 198th, a decline from 171st in 2022. The results were announced in January 2024. There was no Swachh Survekshan in 2024, and the city did not undergo a survey. After a gap, the central team is set to evaluate the city’s progress in 2025.

City Corporation has intensified its waste management initiatives, particularly on waste segregation. Officials claim that 80% of the city’s garbage is now being sorted, resulting in savings of ₹10 lakh per month. Efforts are also being made to reduce garbage dumped on the streets.

Citizen Feedback to Play a Key Role

Citizen participation is a crucial factor in the Swachh Survekshan rankings. The central team will interact with residents to gather feedback on the city’s cleanliness. The grading will depend significantly on these public opinions.

With over 1,300 sanitation workers—including regular, direct-salary, and contractual employees—the team will review manpower utilization and the effectiveness of cleaning operations.

New Swachh Survekshan Framework

For the 2025 survey, the Swachh Survekshan Toolkit has been revised, with ten key assessment parameters:

  1. Visible Cleanliness
  2. Waste Segregation, Collection & Transportation
  3. Solid Waste Management
  4. Access to Sanitation
  5. Used Water Management
  6. Mechanization of Desludging Services
  7. Advocacy for Swachhata
  8. Strengthening of Institutional Parameters
  9. Welfare of Sanitation Workers
  10. Citizen Feedback & Grievance Redressal

Additionally, projects approved by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) will be closely monitored for execution. Data verification measures will be implemented, and any discrepancies found may attract stringent penalties.

To maintain transparency and quality assurance, MoHUA has introduced various measures, including surprise field visits, GPS tracking of assessors, a grievance redressal system, and an IT-based monitoring system through the Swachhatam Portal.

The 2025 Swachh Survekshan rankings will be crucial in determining how effectively Belagavi has improved its cleanliness and waste management practices. Residents’ feedback and municipal efforts will together shape the city’s standing in the national rankings.
