In a surprising turn of events for hoteliers gearing up for New Year’s Eve, the Belagavi city Corporation launched a crackdown on Friday, December 27th, targeting cleanliness violations, the use of plastic, and hazardous food colors. This action resulted in penalties against 10 establishments, with fines totalling ₹70,000.
A significant portion of the fine—₹50,000—was collected from a single hotel in Shahapur, while another ₹20,000 was recovered from various other establishments. The operation was led by Health Officer Dr. Sanjeev Nandre and municipal staff, who inspected kitchens in several hotels across the north and south parts of the city. A bar and restaurant in Shahapur also faced penal action.
The Municipal Health Department, under Commissioner Shubha B., instructed hotel inspections after receiving complaints about unsanitary practices. The Commissioner emphasized the need to ensure hygiene, avoid using hazardous colors in food preparation, and eliminate plastic packaging.
During the inspections, violations such as unclean kitchens, harmful dyes, and plastic materials for food delivery were identified. In one severe case, a decision was nearly made to shut down a hotel in Shahapur due to poor hygiene. However, the establishment was instead penalized after agreeing to improve its conditions.
The inspections come as the city prepares for a surge of customers during New Year’s celebrations. Commissioner Shubha B. had instructed health officers to focus on maintaining hygiene in kitchens and ensuring compliance with food safety standards. Hotels found violating these guidelines were subjected to punitive measures.
Health Officer Dr. Nandre and health inspectors conducted surprise raids, particularly in the northern part of the city. Their actions have sparked concern among hoteliers, highlighting the Corporation’s commitment to upholding health and safety standards in public establishments.
The Municipal Corporation has reiterated the importance of adhering to hygiene standards and avoiding harmful practices. The Health Department has also warned of continued inspections and stricter penalties for non-compliance in the future.
You have to list the names of these establishment and what was inspected. Otherwise this post has no credibility!
