On Saturday the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) restarted the HalagaMacche bypass road work under police protection against the interest of farmers.
As soon as the farmers approached the officials, the police detained a few farmers and later released them.
Several earthmoving equipment was used to flatten the fertile land. Farmers had stopped the work on Wednesday and Thursday. Then the work was stopped on Friday but on Saturday, the work restarted under huge police protection.
On Saturday, the NHAI returned and started the work under police protection. On knowing this, farmers in large numbers led by president of Sheti Bachav Samiti Balaram Pote, Devidas Chavan Patil and Subhash Lad gathered at the place to stop the work. But before they act, the police arrested four farmers and dispersed others from the site.
The farmers who were arrested at 10 am were released at noon on the condition that they would not appear again at the site of road work.
The NHAI planned to construct the bypass road to join National Highway-4 and 4A. But thousands of farmers from Vadgaon, Angol, Shahapur, Halaga, and other villages will lose their fertile land in the process. They were not paid to justify compensations too. Some farmers have gone to court even then NHAI has begun the work. Farmers said only issuing one notification does not make NHAI the landholders and the entire process is not as per law.
