Belagavi’s City Corporation and the Belagavi Smart City ltd. have been directed to jointly submit a detailed report concerning the closure of the Shahapur road(BoI circle to old PB Road), which has been the center of attention following a compensation decision involving ₹20 crore.(Court had asked the Govt to pay Rs. 20 crore as compensation for the land acquired for the said road, but the Corporation handed over the acquired land) State Infrastructure and Economic Development Board issued the directive during a meeting held on Thursday (December 12) at the Command and Control Center of the Smart City Department.

The controversy surrounding the ₹20 crore compensation and the subsequent proposal by the City Corporation to reclaim the road has sparked statewide discussion since September. Recognizing the significance of this issue, the Infrastructure Board has demanded a thorough report highlighting all pertinent details of the road project. This move is expected to pave the way for further board decisions.

Officials from the City Corporation, Smart City, and the Infrastructure Board attended the meeting, which included a review of the Smart City Scheme and the Round-the-Clock Water Supply Scheme. During the discussions, the Shahapur road issue emerged as a key topic. While the officials provided verbal updates, Managing Director Sharad insisted on a formal joint report from the City Corporation and Smart City for greater accountability.

In its general meeting on December 5, the City Corporation decided to reacquire the land to reopen the Shahapur road. This resolution was proposed by Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil and approved during the meeting, which also included a decision to seek legal counsel on the matter. However, with the legislative session commencing shortly after, the City Corporation has yet to initiate further action. Proceedings are likely to resume once the session concludes.

The City Corporation’s resolution has raised questions about the legal authority of MLAs to propose resolutions during Corporation meetings. This issue will likely undergo legal scrutiny, further delaying the resolution process.

The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure and Economic Development Board (KUIDFC), which oversees the implementation of the Smart City Scheme and the 24-Hour Water Supply Scheme in Belagavi, has been tasked with coordinating this matter. The board’s demand for a comprehensive report underscores the urgency and importance of resolving the Shahapur road issue.

  1. The provision of TDR should be offered to the owner in lieu of lost land.. also the same can be cashed out by the building and realtor.. alternatively Belgaum needs a ring road.. a long standing need..
