In a strategic push to accelerate railway development in the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency, MP Jagadish Shettar held an extensive review meeting on Tuesday with the General Manager of South Western Railways in Hubballi. The discussion focused on a wide range of issues, from enhancing local connectivity to reviving suspended train services, all aimed at improving railway infrastructure in and around Belagavi.
Boost for Farmers: New Underbridge in Sulebhavi
Addressing the long-standing concerns of farmers, Shettar urged the Railway General Manager to construct a new connecting road near Level Crossing No. 79/A in Sulebhavi village. This road underbridge will significantly ease access to agricultural lands cut off by the railway line, offering much-needed relief to the local farming community.
Crackdown on Encroachments Near Ghataprabha
Shettar raised the issue of illegal encroachments near Ghataprabha Railway Station. In response, railway authorities assured that verification notices will be served to property owners in the vicinity to confirm legal ownership and prevent future encroachment.
Green Signal for New Railway Lines
Several major railway expansion plans were also discussed:
A preliminary survey will soon be undertaken for a new railway line connecting Lokapur, Ramdurg, Savadatti, and Dharwad, aimed at opening up interior regions to better rail access.
The much-anticipated Belagavi–Kittur–Dharwad line is moving forward, with land acquisition nearing completion and construction expected to commence shortly.
Hope for Vande Bharat Extension to Belagavi
A key proposal to extend the Bengaluru-Dharwad Vande Bharat Express up to Belagavi has been forwarded to the Railway Board. Officials expressed optimism that the extension would be approved soon, making high-speed rail travel more accessible to Belagavi passengers.

Update on Ongoing Infrastructure Projects
Progress is also being made on existing commitments:
Road Overbridges near Level Crossings No. 381, 382, and 383 in Belagavi city are in the tendering stage, promising to decongest traffic and improve safety.
The Belagavi–Manuguru Express, previously cancelled, will be restarted soon in response to strong public demand.
Belagavi-Miraj MEMU Proposal
In a move to enhance commuter convenience, a proposal has been submitted to convert the Belagavi–Miraj–Belagavi passenger train into a MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) service. This will reduce travel time and improve frequency on this key route.
Positive Response from Railways
The meeting concluded on a high note, with the Railway General Manager expressing full cooperation and a commitment to act swiftly on the issues raised. “These initiatives will strengthen railway infrastructure, improve connectivity, and directly benefit the people of Belagavi,” said MP Jagadish Shettar.
With multiple projects on track and new proposals gaining momentum, the Belagavi region is set to witness a new phase of rail-driven development.
