‘Feeding Zones’ planned at four city locations; financial aid announced for injured girl
The Belagavi City Corporation has decided to construct a temporary shed at Hirebagewadi to house and sterilize stray dogs as part of its population control measures. The sterilization contract has been re-tendered, and once the new contractor is finalized, the capacity at Hirebagewadi will be expanded, officials said.
Currently, stray dogs captured from different parts of the city will be kept at the Hirebagewadi facility. The sterilization campaign will begin as soon as the shed construction is completed, said Municipal Commissioner Shubha B.
Action after Marutinagar incident
Commissioner Shubha also shared updates on the recent dog attack on a two-year-old girl in Marutinagar. Preliminary findings revealed that a local rickshaw driver was feeding meat to stray dogs, which led to a large gathering of dogs in the area. During the commotion, one of the dogs attacked the child.
“The rickshaw driver’s details have been identified, and a police complaint will be filed,” said the Commissioner, adding that people should refrain from throwing food or meat waste on the roads.
Strict warning to meat vendors
The Corporation has issued strict notices to meat sellers who dump waste in open spaces. “This practice attracts stray dogs and causes nuisance. If violations continue, stern action will be taken,” the Commissioner warned.
To regulate public feeding of stray dogs, the Corporation will soon create four designated ‘Feeding Zones’ within city limits. “Those who wish to feed dogs must do so only at these designated places,” the Commissioner said.
The Municipal Corporation has also announced financial assistance for the treatment of the injured girl.
Although the Corporation has an Animal Husbandry Department, it currently lacks a veterinarian. “A veterinary doctor will soon be appointed,” Commissioner Shubha informed, adding that discussions have already been held with the District Collector.

At present, limited sterilization surgeries are being conducted at the Srinagar facility, but large-scale operations will soon shift to Hirebagewadi. The rabies vaccination drive for stray dogs is also ongoing and will be expanded further.
The current sterilization work is being handled by a contractor appointed in 2022. However, after three unsuccessful tender attempts, the Corporation has now floated the tender for the fourth time, hoping for a positive response this round.
