Veeranna S. Koujalgi Veteran Congress leader and former Speaker of the State legislative assembly died of prolonged illness at KLES Prabhakar Kore hospital here on Wednesday morning. He was 76 years old and is survived by wife, three daughters and a son.
He was a mechanical engineer and served as Sub Lieutenant in the Indian Navy Unit in Pune. He was in the army during the 1965 India-Pakistan war. He was first elected to the Karnataka assembly in 1972 and then subsequently for five times from Arabhavi in Gokak taluk. He was a minister in the Deva Raj Urs and S.M. Krishna-led governments.
He also served as the Speaker from February 1993 to December 1994 and as president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during 2000-01.
Last rites were performed in Belgaum in the afternoon.
